How did I manage to get sucked into the whole "is magick Hellenic" conversations yet again?

Is it because tonight is the dark moon? Because we have an eclipse soon? Because clearly I'm not being entertained enough on other emailing lists? I can has a more amusing Intarwebs, y/y?

Maybe it's the mystique, the sheer art of it all, the je ne sais quoi, the whole question of whether or not magick is de rigeur in Hellenismos or perhaps it's that whole "Omgs! I don't want to be lumped in with the neo-pagans/Wiccans/witches/uncool-kids-who-sit-in-the-front-of-the-bus!!!!!111eleventy-one" crap which I find to be so embarrassingly passé.

I'd make paper airplanes loaded with spitballs and fire them away at these people, but I really don't want to get after-school detention.



So, um, about those um, Greek gods. Um, yeah. They're like wicked cool an' stuff. Yeah.

Me too. And to think this conversation actually didn't involve him! O_O

I read his post on Olympianism, and not even my Hermes child wanted to touch that. It walked away and contemplating stealing someone's shoe or something.

The people who think that magick is a tad drive me about as buggy who think that recon is a fad. And really, it doesn't matter what the fad is--everything can turn or be turned into a fad.

Then there are those of us who stick around, and that's totally cool.

By fad, I meant the people who join, not out of love or experience with a deity but cause they think "oh this is cool! Let's be pagan." They buy a few books and call themselves experts. They call themselves Hellenic Polytheists and mix all sorts of things together. They're certainly polytheists, but on the eclectic side, which is fine, but then don't say you're strictly Hellenic and claim that your practise is ancient.

Its not that. I just find many who mess with 'magick' to become delusional to the point that they think they are more special than normal. That they think they control the power. That they lose control. I have seen that happen before, so I'm wary of it.

Besides I feel like its cheating the game a bit. I used the metaphor of tilting the pool table... thats my feelings on it. To me I'd rather win a pool game on my own merits, not on my ability to use the forces of gravity to my benefit.

I've seen the same delusions with anyone who gets ANY amount of power, imagined or otherwise. I've seen it in various communities with the tiara-seekers and what-not. Some personalities are just LIKE that.

It'd be like writing off Greek religion entirely because a few of its adherents are just simply batshit.

Using your brains is cheating too. What is someone is not as smart as you are?

I'd agree with the power bit. And I just about have done the second thing due to the Julianic Order and Tim Alexander. And as far as #3 its not cheating its natural ability. Some people are simply better equipped than others. Whoever said we were all created equal... LOL Oh yeah. Abraham Lincoln. But thats not a fact, its an opinion. But I hardly think his intent in saying that related to people being smarter or dumber as much as men and women of african descent being fully humans as much as anyone else.

Man, I don't get the panties in a twist that some people get over this: I may not do magic (mostly, cause I am lazy. But if I did, it would probably be the sort in T Thorn Coyle's Evolutionary Witchcraft) but I don't care if anyone else does.

It's between them and the gods. However they deal it is their problem, not mine.
